About this work
Five women in romantic-era-inspired dresses dance in an evenly spaced line across a plain, horizon-free background, framed by a thin, pale wood frame. The figures are caught in active, expressive poses, with raised arms, pointed feet and flowing hair, so the row reads as a rhythm moving from left to right.
Their voluminous puff sleeves, pleated skirts, empire waists and delicate ribbons are built from overlapping translucent watercolor and gouache washes in cream, dusty rose, ochre, teal and sage. Edges bleed softly in wet-on-dry fashion and the tooth of the rag paper shows through, giving the piece a graceful, nostalgic, poetic feel.
