A small group of skaters in long coats and hats glides along a frozen canal in the low light of a winter sunset. The ice glows in soft pewter and pale gold, scratched with the lines of earlier skaters, while long blue shadows stretch behind them.

Pollarded willows line the right bank, their bare branches dusted with snow, and dry golden reeds frame the path. Far off, a church spire rises from a hazy horizon, adding quiet depth to the scene.

The loose, textured brushwork and warm, muted palette give it the feel of a vintage plein-air oil painting, calm and nostalgic.
