About this work
A straight dirt path runs deep into a forest of tall pine and birch trunks, converging toward a soft glow at the far end. Roughly eight simple draped-sheet ghosts with dark oval eyes stand still among the trees on either side, shrinking in size with distance, over a forest floor of undergrowth and fallen needles.
The light is flat and overcast, with brightness gathered in a hazy clearing at the vanishing point. Heavy atmospheric haze softens the distant trees, and the tonal range is muted and low in contrast, in olive, umber and bone white. Loose, dry-brush oil strokes on visible canvas grain give the scene a quiet, melancholic stillness.
