About this work
A classic sheet ghost with two simple dark eye holes stands beside a calm black horse, its head turned three-quarters toward the viewer and subtly bridled. The pair stands slightly left of center, seen frontally at eye level, with dry autumn grass and low undergrowth along the ground.
Dense, shadowed tree trunks close in on both sides, with clusters of muted burnt-orange foliage breaking through the canopy. Soft, low light falls on the sheet and the horse's face while the rest of the scene sinks into deep shadow, so the pale fabric seems to glow against the dark woods. Loose impressionistic strokes in the foliage and smoother blending on the drapery, over a visible canvas weave, give the oil painting a quiet, folk-tale feel.
