Two small figures in flowing white ghost costumes stand together in a tall meadow of dried grass and Queen Anne's lace, one appearing to hold a small glowing lantern. Silhouetted trees with weathered autumn foliage flank the scene, and a scattering of small dark birds or bats crosses the sky.

A large, hazy moon glows through thick drifting clouds in the upper right, filling most of the frame with diffuse light and no hard shadows. The painting follows the manner of an older academic landscape, with soft blended brushwork, visible canvas grain, varnish-like glazing and gentle impasto in the clouds and leaves.
