Roughly forty horses fill an open valley, some grazing with lowered heads, some resting or rolling in the grass, a few galloping along a rocky hillside. Willows and stippled old trees gather at one side, low scrub at the other, and a handful of tiny grooms and riders appear among the herd.

The piece is painted in the manner of a classical Chinese horse handscroll: thin ink washes and fine outlines over a warm, ochre ground with visible silk weave, gentle fading and a softly weathered patina. The mood is quiet, earthy and contemplative.
