Two small mice sit side by side in the dark opening of a gnarled tree trunk. They have bright black eyes, pink noses and fine whiskers, and they look straight out at the viewer. Branches of white and blush-pink blossom, with buds and fresh green leaves, curve around the hollow like a frame.

Behind them the woodland dissolves into a warm, hazy glow of gold and cream. The brushwork is soft and richly blended, with careful detail in the fur and petals. The scene feels tender and storybook-like.
