About this work
A tall, radiating star hangs high in a hazy neutral sky, its soft glow the only concentrated light in the scene. Below it, slightly right of center, an empty manger is rendered abstractly with no human figures, so the nativity is suggested rather than shown.
Heavy palette-knife impasto builds the star and manger in thick, sculptural strokes, while the sky is dragged and scraped into a misty softness. Vast negative space and a muted palette of sage grey-beige, parchment and soft gold ochre give the picture a quiet, sacred stillness.
