About this work
A single hanging bunch of mistletoe fans out across a warm parchment-cream ground, its olive-green leaves arranged in pairs along curving stems and dotted with clusters of creamy ivory berries. A dusty burgundy velvet bow ties the bunch at the top, its two long tails falling through the middle of the foliage.
The piece is painted by hand in a loose, naive gouache manner: leaves laid in confident single strokes, berries built from a few thick dabs, the ribbon pulled in long flat strokes that follow its folds. Soft, even light and a matte finish keep everything muted and quiet, with a faint canvas tooth showing through the thin background wash.
