About this work
About eighteen tall, thin skeletal figures stand shoulder to shoulder in a single row, all facing the viewer. Each has a round chalk-white skull with oval black eye sockets, a shroud-like black robe that drips at the hem, and spindly, scribbled legs. Their heights vary rhythmically, and near the center a much smaller figure stands beside a tiny orange pumpkin, the one bright accent.
Painted in a contemporary primitive folk style, the scene has wobbly edges, dry-brush dragging and thick, chalky dabs of paint. Warm taupe fills the space above the heads and a textured cream band lies below the feet. The mood is deadpan and quirky, spooky but gentle.
