Symmetrical bare trees flank both banks of a still pond that recedes toward a glowing horizon at the center. Two pairs of small, simply drawn ghosts, plain draped white forms with dot eyes, stand at the water's edge on either side, facing the water.

A soft glow from a low, hazy sun or moon is reflected on the calm surface, and heavy mist dissolves the tree line into the sky. Fine craquelure and visible canvas grain cover the whole picture like an antique oil painting, with gentle brushwork in hazy gold, bark brown and sepia, and soft gray mist.
