About this work
A single witch is seen from behind and slightly to the side, placed just right of center in a wide, quiet expanse. The figure is a flat, near-solid dark shape with no face, topped by a tall, crooked-tipped hat and wrapped in a long, tattered cloak whose frayed edges break apart into the fog.
Low rolling mist and indistinct dark ground masses run along the bottom, and an empty, weather-heavy sky fills the upper two-thirds. The palette is a muted, sepia-toned monochrome of parchment beige, dusty taupe, smoky olive grey and soft charcoal, lit by diffuse, sourceless light.
The oil painting is a tonalist work, with dry-brush scumbling, broad soft strokes and smudged edges over visible canvas tooth, giving an aged, matte patina and an eerie, melancholic stillness.
