About this work
A wide, panoramic vista with no single focal subject, built from stacked horizontal bands: a pale hazy sky, a soft distant mountain ridge, a veil of misty hills, and a dense foreground line of autumn shrubs and small trees. The countryside is quiet and uninhabited, with no structures or figures.
Distance is suggested by softening and desaturating the farther bands rather than by linear perspective, under soft, overcast daylight that casts no shadows.
In this oil painting, thin, dry-brushed strokes in the sky and mountains give way to thick, choppy impasto dabs in the foreground foliage, with the canvas weave visible throughout. The palette of oatmeal, taupe, lavender-gray and burnt orange gives a serene, nostalgic feel.
