About this work
A solitary oak with a thick, gnarled trunk and a broad, sprawling canopy stands just right of center on a low, grassy horizon. Low grass and scattered shrubs fill the foreground, and faint silhouettes of distant trees fade into the mist on both sides.
The light is soft and sourceless, and heavy fog softens every edge. A subtle vignette darkens the corners, and the muted beige, sienna and olive tones look slightly aged and desaturated.
Painted in oil on linen, the piece pairs loose, dabbed brushwork in the foliage with smooth blending in the fog and sky, with the canvas weave visible throughout.
