About this work
Viewed from above, a snowy slope descends from the lower left into a dense line of pines, while a forested valley recedes into thick fog in the upper right. There is no single focal subject; the eye travels through layers of depth, from crisp, dark foreground trees to progressively paler ones that dissolve into the haze.
Soft overcast light carries a pale warm glow filtering through the fog from the upper right, and dry grasses poke through the snow. The palette of grey-blue, snow cream, muted pine green and faded taupe keeps the background almost monochrome.
Loose, textured oil brushstrokes define the snow and foreground pines, and the canvas grain shows through the thinner, hazier passages.
