About this work
A small, slightly sparse fir tree with long, drooping branches stands left of center in an otherwise empty, dark room. A small eight-pointed brass star tops it, a few tiny warm lights are scattered through the branches, and its base is wrapped in a rough brown burlap sack gathered in folds.
A soft amber glow behind the tree fades into deep shadow at the corners, leaving the right two thirds of the picture as quiet, mottled brown space. The painting follows the dark backdrops of Dutch and Flemish old masters, with scumbled, dry-brushed strokes, visible canvas tooth, a matte finish and feathery, loosely painted needles.
