About this work
Large white and cream hydrangea blooms fill nearly the whole frame, threaded with wispy dried stems, small faded blossoms and curling leaves in warm tan and olive. There is no vase or table line, only the arrangement itself against pockets of near-black shadow.
A soft, warm light from the upper left picks out the central and left blooms while the right side dissolves into darkness. Thick impasto on the petal clusters contrasts with thinner glazed passages in the background, and a faint aged-varnish patina gives the whole a nostalgic, quietly romantic mood.
