About this work
A cluster of ripe pears sits in a shallow porcelain bowl decorated in cobalt blue. The bowl rests on a loosely draped cream cloth. The fruit catches a soft light that picks out its freckled, golden-olive skin, and the rest of the scene falls away into deep shadow.
Heavy curtains in oxblood red and dark green hang on either side of a nearly black background. Loose, visible brushstrokes shape the folds of the cloth. The mood is quiet and old-world, in the manner of a classical still life.
