About this work
A loosely gathered cluster of everyday objects sits along a tabletop before a plain, undetailed wall: a woven basket of bread, a dark glass bottle, a stemmed glass, a whole orange, a halved melon and a sprig of vine leaves. Seen from slightly above and straight on, the arrangement has the flattened depth of a traditional still life.
Soft, even light casts gentle shadows beneath each object. The muted palette of brick red, toasted gold, olive and deep umber is built with visible dry-brush strokes on canvas, with restrained impasto only on the brightest highlights.
