About this work
A seated skeleton, painted as a memento-mori figure, cradles a large, loose bouquet of dried wildflowers and seed heads in its bony hands. The figure sits right of center and fills most of the frame, with tight, intimate cropping and dark, undefined space at the upper right.
Soft, warm light falls across the skull and ribcage before dissolving into shadow at the edges. The anatomy is modeled with gentle, painterly chiaroscuro rather than sharp detail, in the manner of a 17th-century Dutch-style portrait.
Thin, smoothly blended oil layers sit over visible canvas weave, and a network of fine antique crackle covers the surface as if the varnish had aged for centuries.
