Four hazy, pale figures stand among dark tree trunks. Their forms are only suggested by a few smeared strokes of grey and white. They seem to dissolve into the forest around them.

The paint is laid on thickly with a knife and broad brush, and the ridges and scrapes of umber, olive, rust and ochre are clearly visible. Flecks of golden leaf colour break up the dark mass, and the woven canvas shows through at the edges. The scene is more atmosphere than detail, quiet and haunting.
