About this work
Two evergreen spruces stand on the left third of a broad, open snowfield, the taller rooted in a dark clump of low brush with a smaller, leaning sapling in front. To the right, generous calm space of snow and pale sky opens out, while a low dusky shoreline, a faint distant tree and misty hills dissolve toward the horizon.
Flat, overcast winter light carries a faint warm glow along the skyline. The painting reads like a quiet late-19th-century plein-air study: thick chalky impasto in the snow, thin dry-brush scumbling in the sky, feathery bristle marks in the foliage, and a fine crackled surface that lends a gentle, age-worn patina.
