About this work

Two stylized horses with elongated necks and spindly legs stand in profile, facing one another nose to nose across the center of a wide, symmetrical composition. The left horse is a cream-and-rust pinto with irregular patchwork spots, the right a deep umber brown with scattered pale spots, and both have long, loosely flowing dark tails that reach nearly to the ground. Between and beneath their lowered heads stands a tiny minimalist human silhouette in a wide-brimmed hat, dwarfed by the animals.

The figures sit like cutouts on a single flat plane, surrounded by generous open space. Dry-brushed, matte paint, thicker roughly edged dabs for the spots, and faint scuffs, thin scratches and soft craquelure over the background give the piece an aged, hand-painted feel that is serene, whimsical and gently surreal.
