A small child in a long hooded cloak and pointed bonnet walks in profile along a diagonal garden path, carrying a lit lantern. Black cats perch on and around the pumpkins lining the way, a single crow crosses the hazy sky, and a bare tree holds a few clinging gold and rust leaves.

A white picket fence runs along the path while a pale gabled house or chapel fades into the mist. The light is soft and overcast, with the lantern's small warm glow the only concentrated brightness. Loose, dry-brush strokes and an aged, grainy surface give this storybook scene a nostalgic, gently spooky feel in dusty ochre, ivory and muted pumpkin orange.
