The stag stands square to the viewer in the middle of a wide meadow. Its antlers rise in a symmetrical crown. Fine, dense lines build up the shaggy neck and the soft shading on its flank.

The low hills and the grass are drawn with lighter, looser hatching, and most of the cream sheet is left empty. This leaves plenty of open sky and keeps the animal as the one point of focus.
