About this work
A quiet snowy village street recedes from the foreground, lined with blue, coral-red and peach clapboard houses and a cream church whose steeple carries a snow-capped cross. A tall bare tree anchors each side, their thin dark branches scratched into the paint. Snow-dusted evergreens, picket fences and glowing lamp posts dot the lane, where a few tiny figures walk, shown only as small loose shapes.
The light is soft and overcast, with a quiet glow from a few warm windows. Falling snow is dabbed and speckled across a hazy teal sky. Thick palette-knife and brush strokes build up the snow and rooftops, and fine craquelure and a faded, matte finish give the scene the patina of an aged naive painting.
