A lone rider in a dusty hunting-red coat and black riding helmet walks a dark bay horse, seen in profile, across trampled cream-colored snow. Two tall, shadowed tree trunks frame the scene while a hazy woodland of olive and grey-brown dissolves softly behind.

The light is soft and overcast, with pale grey-blue shadows pooling in the snow. Short, dabbed brushstrokes and thick, creamy impasto give the surface the rough, matte feel of an old plein-air oil sketch, quiet and nostalgic.
