About this work
A low, pale-walled manor house with a dark maroon roof and two white-framed windows sits slightly left of centre, seen through a natural arch of autumn trees. A pinkish dirt path leads from the foreground to its entrance, with open green lawn at the right and a large, twisting dark tree overlapping the house at right-centre.
Dense rust, orange and golden foliage fills the left, built from many small stacked dabs and short strokes whose edges dissolve into one another. Soft, overcast daylight, a grey-lavender sky between the branches and a matte, aged-varnish finish give the post-impressionist scene a quiet, nostalgic, slightly melancholic calm.
