About this work
A low, wide horizon leaves the upper two-thirds of the canvas to a vast layered sky. The sun sits low and central, glowing through bands of cloud in peach, rose and mauve-grey, while the upper sky stays cool and shadowed.
Below, rolling harvested fields in dried wheat gold and muted green are dotted with hedgerow trees and bushes. Loose, broken brushwork and dry-brush scumbling give the clouds a windswept feel, and the muted, slightly dusty finish makes the scene quiet and pastoral, like a small plein-air study.
