A dachshund with a dappled coat of black, tan and caramel stands upright. It wears a slouchy blue beret and round golden glasses, and it holds a white cup of coffee in both paws. Its sideways glance gives the portrait a dry, thoughtful humor.

The paint is laid on in thick, sculptural strokes, and the ridges of the brushwork catch the light. Behind the dog, horizontal bands of powder blue and butter yellow run across the whole canvas and make a bright, cheerful setting.
