A hushed evening scene in oil, where three tall ghost figures stand at the water's edge, smooth draped forms with no facial detail. Their pale shapes and reflections are the brightest note in an otherwise dark, dusty palette.

A distant gothic cathedral or castle with tall spires crowns a low hill, flanked on both sides by bare, silhouetted autumn trees. A hazy full moon sits low in the amber-toned sky, and the still lake in the foreground mirrors moon, castle, trees and ghosts alike.

Soft diffused light, atmospheric haze and visible canvas grain give the whole picture a gauzy, nostalgic, quietly eerie quality.
