A Highland cow faces the viewer head-on, its wide horns sweeping out and its russet-gold coat built from thick, curling strokes of paint. It stands among pink cosmos, white daisies and orange poppies, with tall grasses all around.

Behind the cow, dark green pines and blue-grey mountains fade into cool mist. The warm coat against the pale sky makes the animal the clear focus of the scene.
