About this work
An extreme close-up of hydrangea clusters and full-bloom peonies fills the wide canvas, with blossoms and sage-green leaves bleeding off all four sides. There is no vase, table or setting, only a packed, layered field of muted petals.
The oil is applied with a palette knife in heavy impasto, leaving thick ridges and distinct striations across the petals, while the canvas weave shows through in thinner passages. Soft, low-contrast light picks out the palest petals, and the edges where blooms meet the dark ground blur into a hazy, antique softness.
