About this work
A thick cluster of wildflowers rises from the lower two-thirds of the canvas and thins into loose sprigs toward the top, set against a bare dark ground. Cream and blush blooms with dark centers dominate, joined by a few lavender-grey blossoms and olive-brown foliage on slender stems.
The light is low and diffuse, so the flowers emerge slowly from the shadows instead of being spotlit. Soft impasto marks the flower heads while thinner, scumbled paint fills the background, and an antiqued glaze lends a hazy, aged patina with the canvas weave faintly showing through.
