About this work
A band of evergreens and rust-coloured bare trees stretches across the middle of the scene. Their edges blur into a pale grey sky. In front of them lies an open field of snow, with scuffed, buttery strokes of paint across it.
The palette is restrained, mostly greys with deep green and a little reddish brown. The paint is applied thinly and quickly, so the scene reads as a quick study of a cold, still day.
In the painting
Spruce trees · Snowfield · Bare birches · Grey sky · Forest edge
