A cream stoneware bowl with blue bands sits on a worn wooden table, heaped with deep red cherries whose long stems curl in every direction. A few more cherries have rolled onto the folded linen cloth in front, which is striped in faded blue.

The background is a smoky, brushy dark brown-green. Soft light falls on the bowl and fruit and picks out the highlights on the cherry skins. Thick, visible strokes give the scene a quiet, old-master feel.
