About this work
A jolly Santa Claus in a brick-red suit and hat sits with round wire glasses on his nose, absorbed in a large open book. A single cream candle in a brass holder burns beside him, and a dark Christmas tree dotted with tiny glowing lights fills the left edge of the scene.
The light is pure chiaroscuro: the candle and the book's pages glow golden across his white beard and face while the room falls away into deep umber shadow. Thick, buttery impasto strokes and a visible linen weave give it the quiet, nostalgic feel of a vintage Christmas illustration.
