About this work
A procession of five lanky skeletons in draped capes of charcoal, rust and cream walks in rhythmic profile along a muddy road. Each carries a glowing orange pumpkin pail. Their skulls are softly painted with dark hollow eyes and thin, sketchy limbs, so they read as whimsical rather than anatomical.
Behind a weathered cream picket fence, three whitewashed cottages with black gabled roofs stand in a staggered row, their windows lit with small amber glows. Bare autumn trees frame both sides, a pale full moon hangs in a hazy taupe sky, and a small black cat waits at the far right edge.
The paint is chalky and muted, with dry-brush scumbling, scratchy marks and loose, slightly wobbly charcoal and ink outlines. The result is a gently spooky, nostalgic folk painting.
