A spotted, appaloosa-patterned horse walks in full side profile, its neck elongated and its legs spindly. Beside its back stands an abstracted figure reduced to flat shapes, topped with a wide-brimmed black hat and with no facial detail.

The pair sits right of center, leaving a large expanse of empty mustard background on the left for calm, airy negative space. Visible hand-painted brush marks, dry-brush strokes, and a slightly worn, matte surface give this naive, Southwestern-flavored ranch scene its gentle, aged charm.
