About this work
Roughly two dozen miniature road cyclists in muted brick red, forest green, mustard, steel blue and dusty pink jerseys are scattered at random angles across an otherwise empty plain. Seen from directly overhead, each rider and bicycle is a small, simplified silhouette with a soft grey-blue shadow beneath it, evenly spaced with generous negative space and no horizon, road or scenery.
The ground is a thick, rough lime-wash or stucco-like impasto in bone white, worked with visible knife and brush marks under a soft, even light. The naive, folk-art figures have simplified proportions and no facial detail, painted in loose strokes, giving the picture a whimsical, serene and quietly quirky feel.
