Skaters glide across a small wooden-railed rink in the middle of a snowy town square. Bundled crowds in red, brown and blue coats gather around it and browse the garland-trimmed stalls, whose windows glow amber.

Strings of lights stretch between the stepped-gable houses, and a lit tree stands beside the snow-covered Gothic church. Thick, textured brushwork and a dusky, snow-filled sky make the warm lights stand out against the cool blues and greys.
