A black steam engine with a red-bowed evergreen wreath on its front puffs through a wintry wood. Green carriages behind it are draped in garlands with red berries. White smoke drifts up through the bare and mossy trees, and a golden glow catches the steam near the headlamp.

In the foreground a small red fox sits beside a glowing log at the edge of a dark stream. The stream reflects amber light from the train, and snow and moss-covered rocks line the banks. The loose, painterly brushwork and muted greys make the fox and the festive greenery stand out.
