About this work
A lone chestnut horse lowers its head to graze in an open meadow. A large, spreading oak with a twisted trunk dominates the left side of the scene, its dark green foliage broken up by flecks of light.
Beyond the field, low hills and clusters of trees fade into a pale, cloudy sky. The brushwork is thick and buttery, and the colours are muted: sage, wheat, sand and warm umber. The mood is calm and nostalgic.
