About this work
A graduated row of heirloom pumpkins in cream, sage-grey and burnt-orange tones sits on a plain tabletop beside a tall, pale stoneware crock of dried flowers and foliage in rust, ochre and dusty brown. At the right, a stack of antique leather-bound books with faded gilt tooling is topped by one more small cream pumpkin.
Soft, even light gives the whole scene a hazy, muted glow, and generous space of warm-grey wall rises above the group. The oil paint is handled in the manner of a classic academic still life, with visible brushstrokes and light impasto on the pumpkins and wall, and looser, more gestural strokes in the dried stems and leaves.
