About this work
A smiling Santa Claus in a dusty brick-red coat and cream fur-trimmed hat leans toward the viewer, holding a cream gift box tied with a soft taupe ribbon and bow. Black leather gloves and a full, fluffy white beard give the portrait its old-world storybook character.
Warm, low-key light glows across the face and beard while the dark background falls away into shadow. Thick impasto in the fur and beard, loose brushwork and a faint canvas weave give it the feel of an early twentieth-century illustrated oil portrait, nostalgic and quietly festive.
