A row of spruce trees, their branches thick with snow, runs across the middle of the picture. Darker evergreens and bare brown trees sit behind them, and the forest fades into a hazy horizon. A wide snowy clearing fills the foreground, with a few dry grass strokes showing through.

The palette is nearly all greys, creams and dark browns. The canvas weave is visible, and the edges look faintly worn and stained, like an old painting. The result is a hushed, melancholy winter scene.
