Two adults in olive jackets and a small child in a pom-pom hat skate together across a wide frozen lake, seen from behind. The adults each hold one of the toddler's hands. Snow-laden spruces and white birches stand beyond the snowy bank under a soft grey sky.

The ice is built from thick, scraped strokes of palette-knife paint. Pale greens, greys and silvers catch the light, and skate scratches and faint reflections of the figures run across the surface. The muted palette is broken only by a few red boots and the family's closeness, which gives the scene a quiet tenderness.
