A witch in a black robe and wide-brimmed pointed hat sits in side profile beneath a large golden autumn tree, reading an open book. Two dusty-orange pumpkins rest at the foot of the tree beside the witch, and small black cats are scattered loosely through the dry field.

The tree and figure anchor the left third while an open meadow stretches toward a small farmhouse and low hills on the hazy horizon. Soft, overcast light, visible canvas grain and loaded, loose brushstrokes give the oil painting a cozy, nostalgic, gently spooky mood.
