About this work
Five pumpkins and gourds of varying size and color sit beside a tall, weathered glazed stoneware crock holding a bundle of dried wheat. They include a large deep-orange ribbed pumpkin, a small orange one, a pale warty heirloom, a mottled olive-green gourd and a small cream pumpkin. Dried maple leaves and loose wheat stalks rest on a rough wooden tabletop in front, and a broad expanse of dark, mottled umber wall fills the left third of the frame.
Directional chiaroscuro light falls from the upper front-left, lighting the pumpkins and crock while the background and lower corners sink into soft shadow. In the manner of a 17th-century Dutch or Flemish still life, soft brushwork and canvas grain meet thicker impasto highlights on the pumpkin ridges and crock rim, under an old-master varnish glow.
