About this work
A dense field of Queen Anne's lace, or cow parsley, fills the lower two-thirds of the picture, with tall dried grasses and wild stems in the foreground. Above, the meadow thins into a hazy, undefined dusk-toned backdrop with no horizon line, where three small white butterflies drift through the open space.
Soft, diffused light gives the scene an overcast feeling. The oil paint is loose and soft in the background and becomes more textured and dabbed in the foreground blooms, and a fine allover craquelure gives the surface an aged, old-master patina. The mood is serene, nostalgic and quietly melancholic.
